DIY Cleaning Wipe System: Reusable & Disposable
Share
There was a time when store-bought wipes and chemical cleaners slowly kept finding their way back into my home. You buy one container here, another spray there, and before long the cabinets are full of products with ingredients you cannot even pronounce.
So I went back to what works for me: a simple, affordable, healthier DIY cleaning system using three jars.
This method helps me save money, reduce waste, reuse what I already have, and keep harsh chemicals out of my home.
My Three Jars
1. Disposable Wipes Jar
This jar holds homemade disposable wipes made from half a roll of strong paper towels such as Bounty or another durable brand.
I use the larger size paper towel rolls, tear each sheet, fold them into squares, stack them neatly into the jar, then pour my homemade cleaning solution over top.
These are perfect when you need to clean something and throw the wipe away, especially for messes you do not want returning inside the home.
2. Reusable Wipes Jar
This jar holds reusable cloth wipes.
My favorite shortcut is using the reusable cleaning cloths from Dollar Tree. I especially like the ones shaped for generic floor sweepers because they are already the right size. No cutting needed.
They fold beautifully and fit right into the jar.
Then I pour the cleaning solution over them and they are ready to use again and again.
3. Used Reusable Wipes Jar
This jar is simple but important.
Every time I use a reusable wipe, I place it into this third jar. Once I have enough, I wash them and reload the clean ones back into the reusable jar.
This keeps everything organized, sanitary, and easy to maintain.
My Homemade Cleaning Solution
I keep it simple:
- 1 part 70% rubbing alcohol
- 1 part white vinegar
- A squirt of Castile soap
- Fill the rest with water
Then I customize it with essential oils such as:
- Lemon for freshness
- Lavender for calm and clean scent
- Tea tree for extra cleansing support
- Eucalyptus during cold and flu season
Why I Love This System
It Saves Money
Store wipes are expensive and disappear quickly.
With this method, I can keep refilling jars for a fraction of the price.
It Reduces Waste
The reusable wipes can be washed and used many times before replacement.
It Helps Limit Harsh Chemicals
Many commercial products contain strong fragrances and unnecessary ingredients. This allows me to know exactly what I am bringing into my home.
Great for Everyday Cleaning
I use these wipes on:
- Kitchen counters
- Bathroom surfaces
- Doorknobs
- Handles
- Tables
- Light switches
- Quick floor spot cleans
Helpful Around Pets and Children
I prefer having a gentler cleaning option in the house when little hands and pets are nearby.
Great for Travel or On-the-Go
Sometimes I take a few disposable wipes with me when leaving the house. I squeeze out extra liquid before use so the jar solution lasts longer.
A Note From Me
Sometimes outside products try to sneak back into the house. It happens. But whenever I see too many chemical bottles piling up again, I tighten things back up and return to this system.
Simple habits can protect your wallet, your environment, and your peace of mind.
Travel Version of the Three-Jar System
When traveling, I make a compact version of my home cleaning wipe system so I do not have to spend unnecessary money on overpriced wipes, tissues, and travel sanitizing products once I arrive.
Best Ways to Make Them for Travel
1. Flat Zip Bag Wipes
Use gallon or quart freezer bags.
Add:
- Folded paper towels or reusable cloth wipes
- A small amount of your homemade solution
- Squeeze out excess liquid so they stay damp, not soaking wet
- Seal tightly
This saves luggage space and works beautifully in hotel rooms, airports, taxis, and public restrooms.
2. Mini Screw-Top Jars
Use small leakproof plastic jars or mini containers.
Fill with:
- A few reusable wipes
- A few disposable wipes
- Enough solution to moisten
Great for purses, backpacks, abaya bags, or carry-ons.
3. Dry Wipes + Mini Spray Bottle
This is excellent for flights.
Pack dry folded wipes or cloths, then bring a small TSA-approved spray bottle filled with your solution.
Spray as needed.
This prevents leaks and keeps everything fresh.
What I Use Them For While Traveling
Especially on trips like Saudi Arabia:
- Hotel remotes
- Door handles
- Bathroom surfaces
- Tray tables on planes
- Shopping cart handles
- Phone screens
- Shoe bottoms before entering room
- Quick hand cleanups
- Public seating areas
Best Essential Oils for Travel
Use lightly.
- Lemon for freshness
- Tea tree for cleansing
- Lavender for calming hotel rooms
- Eucalyptus for stuffy air and cold season
Important Travel Tip
For air travel, do not carry large amounts of alcohol liquid in hand luggage. Use TSA-approved sizes or pack larger liquids in checked baggage.
Huge Money Saver
On long trips, families can spend a surprising amount buying:
- Wet wipes
- Surface wipes
- Tissue packs
- Air fresheners
- Small cleaners
Making your own before leaving can save serious money.
Final Thought
Health is not always about doing something dramatic. Sometimes it is as simple as changing what you clean your counters with.
Since travel can be expensive enough already, I now pack my own homemade wipes and travel cleaning kits. It saves money, keeps me comfortable, and helps me maintain the same healthy standards I use at home no matter where I am in the world.
Small shifts add up.
If you have never made your own wipes before, this may be the perfect place to start.
