Dairy Free Cornbread Recipe by Sabina Noisette

There are certain foods that instantly bring you back home.

Cornbread has always been one of those foods for me.

Growing up, my mother made cornbread often. It was comforting, filling, warm, and always brought a certain feeling into the kitchen that only homemade food can create. The smell alone could make the whole house feel peaceful.

Now that I am older, I still carry on that tradition, but in a healthier way that better reflects how I cook and nourish my family today.

I absolutely love creating recipes that do not rely heavily on traditional ingredients like dairy milk or butter yet still taste rich, satisfying, and homemade with soul and character. This dairy-free cornbread came together beautifully this morning, and my family absolutely loved it.

It is lightly sweet, moist, simple to prepare, and made with ingredients that many people already keep in their pantry.

This recipe is especially wonderful for those looking for:

  • Dairy-free comfort food
  • Plant-based alternatives
  • Healthier homemade baking
  • Budget-friendly family recipes
  • Easy pantry meals

And honestly, there is something very rewarding about pulling warm homemade cornbread out of the oven knowing exactly what went into it.

Dairy Free Cornbread Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup organic all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil
  • 1 flax egg
    • Flaxseed egg is combining 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed With 2 tablespoons water and letting set for five minutes before adding.
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder
  • Pinch of Celtic sea salt (optional)

How to Make the Flax Egg

In a small bowl, combine:

  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • 2 tablespoons water

Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until slightly thickened.

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a small baking pan with parchment paper and lightly spray the parchment with olive oil spray.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine:

  • Cornmeal
  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Optional pinch of sea salt

Mix well.

Step 3: Add the Wet Ingredients

Add:

  • Almond milk
  • Maple syrup
  • Avocado oil
  • Prepared flax egg

Mix until everything is fully incorporated.

I like to mix thoroughly while still being careful not to overwork the batter.

Step 4: Bake

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.

Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 5: Slice and Enjoy

Remove from the oven and allow it to cool slightly.

Slice with a serrated knife any way you like.

Enjoy warm with:

  • Vegan butter
  • Dairy-free spreads
  • Soups and stews
  • Herbal teas
  • Or simply by itself

Why I Love This Version

What I enjoy most about this recipe is that it still carries the warmth and comfort of traditional cornbread while using ingredients that feel lighter and more nourishing.

The flax egg replaces traditional eggs beautifully, while almond milk and avocado oil help keep the texture moist and satisfying.

It proves that healthier choices do not have to feel restrictive or flavorless.

Ingredient Substitutions & Variations

One thing I truly love about recipes like this is how flexible they are. You can easily work with what you already have in your kitchen while still creating a beautiful homemade cornbread with lots of soul and character.

For the flour, I used organic all-purpose flour, but whole wheat flour also works well if you would like a heartier texture. Tortilla flour can also be used if you prefer a finer, softer cornbread. I used avocado oil in this recipe because I enjoy the mild flavor and smooth texture it gives, but coconut oil is another wonderful option that works beautifully. Almond milk was my dairy-free milk of choice, though other plant-based milks may also work depending on your preference. Even the topping can be adjusted to fit your lifestyle, whether you enjoy it with vegan butter, dairy-free spreads, or simply warm on its own fresh out of the oven.

Final Thoughts

Recipes like this remind me that tradition does not have to disappear as we grow and evolve.

Sometimes we simply recreate old favorites with new understanding, healthier ingredients, and deeper intention.

That is exactly what this cornbread represents for me: comfort, memory, nourishment, and home.
